Not at all; many of us understand that orthodontic care can
make a big difference in many people’s overall health. OSA (Obstructive Sleep
Apnea) and SDB (Sleep Disordered Breathing) have largely gone unrecognized in
children but can have serious implications. They can contribute to growth
problems, failure to thrive, asthma, Type 2 Diabetes, ADD, ADHD, autism,
hypertension, stroke and cardiovascular disease.
I recently presented on this topic to a large group of our North
County Dental Professionals. It was a
fun evening and a true passion of mine to help others in our wonderful
profession find new ways we can help our
children grow and thrive. I am a
believer in early detection of OSA & SDB.
My oldest son Jake was having trouble with his nighttime breathing and
because of my exposure to this topic, I was able to evaluate him and in turn get
him to the correct doctor. After having
his adenoids out last summer, I have seen a marked improvement in the quality
of his sleep and the rate of his growth.
As parents, we all have the best interest of our children as our number
1 priority. If you think your child may
be suffering from OSA or SDB, here are some symptoms to look for:
Daytime Symptoms suggestive of
OSA/SDB
- Mouth breathing
- Hyperactivity
- Excessive daytime sleepiness
- Inattention, behavioral problems
- Hyponasal speech (“good mording” instead of “good morning”)
- School problems ADHD-like behaviors
Night/Sleep Symptoms
Suggestive of OSA/SDB
- Snoring
- Gasping
- Pauses in breathing
- Restless sleep
- Night-time sweating
- Night terrors or sleep walking
- Sleeping in unusual positions
- Enuresis (bed-wetting)
This issue certainly does not
apply to all children but if you see these signs in your child, I would suggest
that you find a professional you trust to gather more information and have them
take a closer look.
